We thank you for your letter of the 4th inst.and
the attention you have so courteously given to our letter of the 2nd
inst.
We beg to return the "Government Notification, No.334" of the Colo-
ny of Hong Kong, of which we have made a copy, and would ask whether you
possess a copy of the Merchandise Farks Ordinance, No.15.of 1890, refer-
red to therein. If so, could you kindly allow us to see it.?
We have taken the liberty of underlining in red ink a part of the "Notification" we should like to draw your attention to, and concerning which we should like to suggest for your consideration, and that of the
Governor & Council of Hong Kong, the desirability of some alteration.
In its present form it is easy to evade, as our own experience shews.
All that the fraudulent merchant or Manufacturer now needs to do is to
print upon his fraudulent label the name of some foreign country as
the place of origin, and he cannot then be interfered with. Indeed we
do not see how, - under this Notification-, he could be touched even if
he printed there or the words "Made in England".
